Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about our Nadanut products:


  1. How long have these products been in the marketplace?

    The Wheat Nuts® and Bowlby’s Bits® (now called Nadanut Pecans) were first introduced in the early 1970’s by Pillsbury after years of development so they have been enjoyed by loyal snackers for nearly 50 years now.


  2. What are these products made of?

    These products are made of toasted wheat germ, oil, wheat protein, soybean oil (with added antioxidant for stability), and added colors and flavors. They are sold in both the “legacy” recipes and a newer Non-GMO “clean labeled” version.


  3. What is “Wheat Germ”?

    Wheat germ is the reproductive part of the wheat plant that is stripped away when companies make refined flours. Wheat germ is also the healthy part of the plant containing most of the nutrients including fat, fiber, protein, and complex carbohydrates, all of which interact in numerous ways with the body’s internal systems.   4. Are these products considered natural and do they have chemical preservatives?

    The legacy recipes which were originally developed in the 1970’s still use the original recipes and contain artificial ingredients (color, flavor, and antioxidant). The new generation Nadanut Non-GMO does not contain any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives but it does use a natural antioxidant to help keep the oil from going rancid.


  5. How are these products made?

    We still make these products using the same proprietary processes originally designed by Pillsbury. Because raw wheat germ is naturally high in healthy fats, it oxidizes and goes rancid very quickly. Given this, we first run the wheat germ through a stabilization process to stop the oxidation process. After this we then add the other ingredients to make a dough and then extrude, cut, and dry it using a process that is similar to a pasta operation. The products are then salted and then packaged for sale.


  6. How did you get these products to look, taste, and crunch like a nut?

    It is a unique recipe and process that combines the ingredients in a specific ratio to create a dough-type consistency with a combination of both plant and dairy proteins to provide the proper microstructure and then they are colored, extruded, cut, and then dried to deliver a nut-like appearance, flavor, and texture.


  7. Nuts are healthy, are these products good for me too?

    These products were designed at a macro nutritional level to mimic a basic tree nut composition when it comes to total fat, protein, fiber, and nutrients therefore they are very healthy and deliver the body nutrient rich calories and sustained energy.


  8. What kind of fat do these products contain?

    In contrast to nuts, these products do not contain nut oils but instead have a combination of very nutritious wheat germ oil combined with soybean oil to provide the same texture and functionality.


  9. What level and type of protein do these products contain?

    These products all contain around 3 grams per 1 oz serving or ~11% of a protein complex combining both plant protein (wheat protein) and a milk protein (caseinate). This complex delivers a “complete” protein with all the essential amino acids that are vital to human health.


  10. Can I actually eat these if I’m allergic to tree nuts and peanuts?

    Yes, even though these look, taste and crunch like nuts they do not contain any nut derivatives or allergens so they are safe for people with peanut or tree nut allergies to eat.


  11. How can you claim that these products are certified nut-free?

    We have specific controls in both our plant and supply chain to guarantee that nut-free claim for everything that we make. Nothing that contains nuts is allowed in the facility ever, not even in the lunch room or breakroom where people eat their meals.


  12. What is the Snack Safely stamp on the product?

    This is a stamp from SnackSafely.com, a public service website that helps consumers find foods will full allergen disclosures, above and beyond what the Food & Drug Association (FDA) requires of food manufacturers. We are a participating manufacturer in their program and we fully disclose detailed processing information regarding 11 of the top allergens. They provide a Safe Snack listing of participating manufacturers to schools and other institutions and parents disclosing the full allergen situation of the plant and processing.


  13. What other allergens does this product contain?

    This product is certified 100% nut-free, but since it is based upon wheat germ it does include gluten (wheat protein) and dairy allergens (sodium caseinate, a milk protein. Therefore, this product is not allergen-free.


  14. What is the difference between “Wheat Nuts” and “Nadanut”?

    The two products are based on the same technology and process but the recipes differ slightly. The Wheat Nuts does not have added wheat protein (gluten) and has a slightly harder texture with a general “nutty” flavor whereas the Nadanut does have added wheat protein and an added pecan-type flavor in the Nadanut Pecan. The Nadanut Non-GMO is the same Nadanut recipe except it uses natural color and natural flavor to provide a clean-labeled option for new snack consumers looking for this.


  15. What is the shelf-life of these products?

    The best-if used by date listed is 18 months from when the products are first produced. The products will last longer than this if properly stored. The first thing that will start to turn with this product is that the high level of fat will start to oxidize and have a stale cardboard type smell and taste. These products are prone to absorb moisture and soften some if they are left open to the air in a room with higher relative humidity. If you compare this shelf-life to nuts, these last much longer and will not stale and oxidize as quickly as nuts.


  16. What is the TBHQ listed on the label and why is it in some of the recipes?

    This is an added antioxidant in the oil used in the legacy recipes and this keeps the oil from oxidizing and going rancid and helps deliver the longer shelf life. Without an antioxidant, the product would spoil much faster and develop off-flavors.


  17. Do you have an all natural “clean labeled” recipe?

    Yes, this is the newest addition to the family, Nadanut Non-GMO. This product uses the same basic recipe and the same process as the legacy products except it uses all non-GMO certified ingredients and all natural colors and flavors. This recipe is considered “clean labeled” and is great for the customer base that wants this with their chosen snacks. We will be expanding this range of products in the future and this is the recipe for the next generation of discriminating snackers.


  18. What does Non-GMO mean?

    In today’s food Industry, there are lots of agricultural crops that have been genetically modified to improve their resistance to disease, pests, and adverse weather. Some people do not trust or like these GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) so there is a growing trend with consumers for demanding and consuming non-GMO foods, which are made without the use of anything that has been genetically modified. This term and class of product shares a lot of attributes with organic foods.


  19. Does your plant have any quality certifications by third parties?

    Yes, our facility is certified for food manufacturing by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), is SQF Level 3 certified, and is kosher certified by the Orthodox Union. These products are low water activity and low moisture and have very low risk profile with regard to potential microbial spoilage or contamination. We test every single lot of our product at an accredited outside lab to assure that they are safe and ready to eat before selling.


  20. Are these products good to cook or bake with?

    Yes, these products are very good to cook or bake with and to also use as added crunchy additions on products like cereals, oatmeal, yogurts or ice cream. They are also awesome additions to trail mixes and snack blends too. The one challenge with cooking is watching the level of moisture and the exposure time to this moisture in recipes because these products will soak up any free moisture and in time will get soft quicker than a nut would and lose their crunch.


  21. Do you have any recipes for cooking with these products?

    We do have a Wheat Nuts recipe book developed by the Pillsbury Kitchens back in the 1970’s and 1980’s and this is available for interested home consumers. We are working to develop additional recipes and we plan to seek new ideas and recipes from our valued customers in the future to build our database.   22. Are these products available from any grocery stores?

    No, these products were once available on over 2,800 store shelves up until around 2014, when they were pulled from the former owners. At this point, we have no plans to try and get back onto grocery store shelves given the very high cost and complexity so we chose instead to sell direct to consumers through online stores.


  23. Where can I buy these products?

    As of now, these products can be bought on both Nadanut.com and Amazon.com.

  26. Will you come out with new “flavors” and products?

    Yes, in the Fall of 2019 we plan to introduce a new line of clean labeled Nadanut Seasons using the Nadanut Non-GMO product as the base. At present, we are planning to introduce a Salted Caramel, Sour Cream & Onion, Korean BBQ, Honey Sriracha, and Wasabi Soy seasoned product. Stay tuned and check our website for more updates.


  27. What if I don’t like the products?

    We do want you to be satisfied so we have a 100% product guarantee so if you did not like our product for any reason, we will gladly accept product returns for the original cost of the product.
